Tips for Getting the Most out your Festival Experience

The Film Festival is an exciting experience! For a whole week you will have the unique opportunity to watch 50 movies from all over the world.

Just as in a music festival where you can enjoy 4, 5 or 6 bands performing in a single day, during this week you could also watch several movies a day in order to get a richer experience. We have prepared a special five-ticket package for the Cinemark shows and a 3 ticket Teatro Nacional-Red Carpet event package at special prices.

The program is divided into sections. Our sections are: Iberoamerican Panorama, First Time Directors, Films from the Isthmus, International Showcase, Showcase: Alex de la Iglesia, Cinema & Sports: Boxing, and Red Carpets.

Movie schedules and information will be available beginning March 30th on the Festival’s website where you can read all about films, directors, and actors, as well as watch movie trailers and get information on purchasing tickets.

Useful questions:

What happens at a film festival?

A film festival is an event where films from around the world are projected during a week. Movie directors will be in Panama to share their experiences with us. After their movies are shown, they will join the audience for a question and answer session to exchange opinions and impressions. This year nearly 50 foreign guests will enjoy the movies with you.

How can I choose what movies to watch if I know nothing about their actors or directors?

That’s not a problem. For this Festival, we're showing some of the most successful films in the world, films that have been awarded at international festivals and earned great reviews, so we are sure you’ll find many movies that you’d like to watch.

There are many ways to choose a movie. Take your pick:

By director: Maybe he or she directed another movie you liked. This could give you an idea of what to expect in terms of style

By country: If you like a particular country or culture

By Topic: Movies will be listed by their subject matter or grouped by genre: drama, comedy, sports, women, environment, etc.

By show time: If you know you can only go watch the movies at 5pm, then those are the ones.

Or just be adventurous and choose at random. That’s a good way to explore new and different films.

How do I know I’m going to like it?

We have films for every taste. With a choice of 50 movies, we are sure you’ll find something you like. It will help if you go to one of the festival’s information booths at Cinemark theaters or read our Facebook or Twitter notes. Social networks are good information sources. Also the festival staff can help you choose.

The most important thing to remember is that if you watch a movie you are not totally satisfied with; chances are there will be another movie in the program that you’ll adore. Watching a movie is a unique two-hour experience that brings to your eyes and ears a new story to live.

Where will the festival take place?

The films of the festival will be screened at two main locations. Regular screenings will be at    Cinemark Multicentro Theathers from 2:00 p.m. There will be four (4) screenings daily.

The Red Carpets, Opening and Closing of the Festival will be taking place at the Teatro Nacional in Casco Viejo, daily from April 26 to May 2.

What about parking?

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

Our most important advice: DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. Tickets at film festivals tend to sell out fast. Each film will be shown, at most, two times; the theaters’ seating capacity is not very big, so it is best to secure your ticket early to be on the safe side!

Are there any awards?

Yes! Copa Airlines will present the Audience Award.  You will have the opportunity to choose the winning movie for the categories of First Time Directors and Iberoamerican Panorama.  The award will be presented on May 2nd during the closing ceremony at the Teatro Nacional.

Do I have to dress formally for the Red Carpet events?

No, no dress code is required. But this is a good chance to show off the best of your wardrobe!

Feel the complete experience of the festival

For a great cinematic experience nothing beats a full dinner-and-theater program. After a movie or Red Carpet event, visit one of the Festival-friendly restaurants for a truly rewarding experience. Maybe your favorite movie director is sitting at a close table. You never know!
